Welcome to pennband-social@dolphin, the Penn Band Social Bulletin Board!

Thanks to the kind folks at Dolphin computing services, we have a listserve which we can use for the announcement of social events of interest to the membership of the Penn Band. This is a monthly posting about how to use the bulletin board. While we won't ask you to read this every time it comes out, please do read it your first time so you don't get yelled at and flamed in triplicate. We have always hoped that this type of administrative crap would not be needed - but alas, we're all not blessed with Common Sense, and problems have evolved over the past few years.

1. As a current member of the Penn Band, you are automatically subscribed to pennband-social@dolphin.upenn.edu. If you wish not to be subscribed (temporarily or permanently), simply email sherr@nursing.upenn.edu with your request.

2. Proper usage of this list - announcement of any social, curricular, or extracurricular event which may be of interest/benefit to any or all the members of the Band. For example (but not limited too):

* Movies
* Bowling
* Basketball at Hutch
* Meeting or special function associated with another group you are involved in (ie: Guest speaker, coffee house)
* Intramural sports
* Items for Sale (ie: textbooks, dorm fridge, concert tickets)
* Carpool for break
* Query for roommates for housing signups
* Sporting events
* Study groups
* Game Night
* Sharing a link to photographs/media from a Band function
* Travel together to and from a social event (ie: cabs to the semiformal)
* Social gatherings/Parties

If you are not sure if your message falls under this umbrella, you can ask for clarification at pennband-board@dolphin.upenn.edu.

3. Inappropriate usage of this list - this is really common sense stuff:

* Group replies to a message not directly
pertinent to the social announcement made (ie: witty punchlines, flames, opinions).
* Group replies scolding idiots who use
the list inappropriately.
* Postings of materials unrelated to
social events, ie: political messages, apologies, diatribes, twaddle, spam.
* Attachments - many people still use
modems (gasp!). Be considerate of that, and post your image/file to a website and send the link instead.

4. THIS LIST IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH OXYMORON - only a limited number of undergraduates are on oxymoron, whereas with pennband-social, ALL current members of the Band receive the posting. So, it makes little sense to post to only oxymoron, especially if you want your message to reach as many eyes and be as inclusive as possible. Additionally, no threads of discussion are to take place on pennband-social. If people really wanted it, they would be on oxymoron!

5. Consequences for inappropriate use of pennband-social. To preface: unlike our other list serves, two files control this list. A .list file which itemizes all the recipients of postings and a .sender file which itemizes all members who have posting privileges. At the beginning of the academic year, these lists are identical. Those who abuse the list will immediately lose posting privileges for the remainder of the academic year, but will still receive postings. One strike and you're out - It's that simple.

6. Keep the subject lines of your email rated 'G' - many of our subscribers check their email from work and public places. No one should get fired or blackballed because of band email (of all things!). (The Al Hemmingsen Clause)

7. Finally, since this is an "official" university list serve in which all members are subscribed to, there is a "quid pro quo" on all postings made to this list (the same latitude that we enjoy on oxymoron is not given here). First off, overtly offensive postings (such as sexually explicit comments or disparaging comments about an ethnicity, gender, or creed) are not acceptable. Additionally, because we are a university-funded organization, we cannot publicly endorse/enable advertisement of functions in which illegal (or "high risk") activities take place, such as hazing, consumption of alcohol by minors, and the use of illegal substances. Obviously, violations of these sorts put you in a risky situation, and you lose your posting privileges as outlined in 5.

For example: Posting about a Party is cool. Posting about a Party and advertising a wild kegger is not cool. Posting about a movie night is cool. Posting about a movie and telling people to bring their favorite narcotic is not cool. Posting a section-sponsored event is cool. Posting a section-sponsored event where 24 new members are beaten with paddles and scream "please sir may I have another!" is not good. In short, use your common sense.

Thanks,

The Management
